I bought this house so that we could create our own place from scratch. Me and my wife Martha, we always had this dream. We would buy an old house by a lake and do it up, just how we wanted it. Well here it is, and it's perfect! It looks out over the lake from the north with its own landing spot. We have a neat garden and a paddock that may become the home for Martha's horses. It's the ideal life, and brought about by working hard when I was young and retiring early.
When we started to do up the place we realised that we needed to completely gut the interior. It had been a holiday home for a wealthy couple from the Hamptons, and they had used it for just a couple of weeks each year. Between that it had no maintenance and nobody to look after it - it simply stood, empty, for most of the year and, as we found out, the rot had set into the floors and the wood. That's why we set about stripping it to bits, and with an intermittent electricity supply it was clear that we were going to need to look for a small portable generator.
Back in our apartment we set to on the internet and soon found a great website with some superb selections. When we settle in, when the work is done, we will sort out the electricity supply. Our two sons - Mark and David - will be coming to help when they break for the summer vacation (both are at university). The father and son bonding session will involve stripping out the old floorboards and putting in new. I got them from a reclamation site and they are simply gorgeous. How long will it take to complete? Who knows, but when it is ready it will by mine and Martha's delight!
