Select the right Glassware, enrich your beer drinking experience   by Larry Steevan

Similarly to wine, the beer drinking experience can also be enriched or ruined by the kind of glassware used. Did you know that the shape of the glass permits the carbonation to escape and the nose of the beer to enjoy completely? You may drink a beer out of any glass, but it wouldn't have the same impact. And it is great to know the most appropriate type of glass for different beers.

Clean glasses are very important in beer drinking. Glasses need to be specifically clean to get the real taste of beer. There's a term known as "Beer Clean" which means glasses are not just clean, but clean enough not to change the taste or head of the beer. The glasses used to drink beer should be cleaned without using soap. When you clean a glass with soap, it leaves a film on the glass that is not visible, but you may find a change in the taste and you may also notice that results the lack of head. Baking soda is a good alternative to clean the beer glasses and you can get them definitely 'beer clean'. Commercial products are also available for cleaning beer glasses and get them beer clean. After you clean the glasses you need to air-dry the glasses for best results. Sometimes you may get water spots after they are dry, if this is the case you will have to clean them again. And remember not to freeze the beer glasses. When you freeze the glasses, water can be mixed in to your beer and the cold glass can also affect the temperature of your beer.

Here is a quick guide to select the right type of glassware for your beer.

'Chalice' is normally used for Belgian abbey style beer. The Chalice reveals a look of royalty with a precious metal rim and a thick, short stem. Although Flutes are usually taken for champagne, there are Beer flutes which have shorter stems than champagne flutes. Goblets have a round bowl and are used for high alcohol sipping beers. They can be found in various sizes. Kolsch, which takes the shape of a cylinder has straight sides and is tall. The only beer glass that comes with a handle is the Krug or the Seidel. These can be heavy and can have different textures and come in different sizes. Pilsner glasses are those tall, rather thin walled, sloped glasses with a solid base. There is a glass known as Pokal, which is a European pilsner glass with a stem. The most common beer glass you may have seen is the Pub glass or the Pint glass. These are with straight, thick sides at a small angle making the mouth of the glass bigger than the base.

Wheat beer glasses are tall with thin walls and a solid base. The glass known as Stick or Stange is actually a taller, thinner type of pilsner glass. If you have seen the Tulip glass, you know that it appears to be a tulip, to some extent. It has a roundish bowl, which thins out about half way up the glass, then flares out a little.
Make sure you have the right type of glass and get them beer-clean for a better beer drinking experience.
