Florence, The Cradle Of The Renaissance by Michael
Florence, the capital of Tuscany in Italy, is considered a cultural, architectural, and artistic gem. The museums, palaces, and churches of Florence house some of the most magnificent world artistic treasures. The most important and attractive Florence's sites are the Baptistery, the Bargello, the Uffizi, the Accademia, and the Cathedral. The Santa Maria Novella church and Santa Croce church are authentic art galleries, and the San Lorenzo library is the finest exhibition of Michelangelo's architectural gift.
Florence, the heart and soul of the Italian Renaissance, resembles an open-air museum. If you are keen on architecture, for example, you even do not need to visit any of the museums: the palaces, buildings and squares are masterpieces themselves, the evidences of the architectural history of the past centuries. The cathedral, palaces, and numerous churches of Florence, designed and built by the most noted artists of all times, from Michelangelo to Brunelleschi look so grand and magnificent that you can admire them from the outside.
However, if you step inside, you will discover the other side of Florence - the side that contains multiple treasures: frescoes, paintings, and sculptures created by the geniuses of art, greatest talents of all epochs.
The most visited museum in Florence and in the whole Italy is probably Uffizi Gallery, counting over 2000 works of art in its arsenal. About 1.5 million tourists per year come to visit the Gallery. Designed and built in 1560, the museum has 45 rooms, where not only Florentine masterpieces, but also the best paintings from other parts of Italy are displayed. Of a particular value are the works of Florentine Renaissance and Mannerism.
Another magnet for tourists from all over the world is the fascinating Florence's piazzas. Piazza is an Italian word meaning "a public square or marketplace". One of the major squares in Florence is called Piazza della Repubblica. It has marked the city centre since the Roman times.
Another popular spot for the locals and visitors of the city is Piazzale Michelangelo, which offers a breathtaking panorama of Florence and the Arno valley. The piazza contains a bronze replica of Michelangelo's David. Designed in the end of the 19th century by a Florentine architect Giuseppe Poggi, it has always been a popular meeting place for the city residents.
One of the oldest squares in Florence, dating back to the 14th century, is the Piazza della Signoria. It is a historical place and the site of some great past events: the return of the Medici and the Bonfire of the Vanities.
Palazzo Vecchio, meaning the "Old Palace", was built in 1302 as a town hall, and it still performs its original function. Much of the interior was renovated, of course, but the palace has overall preserved its quaint medieval look.
The list of thing to do in Florence is not confined to visiting museums. Apart from sightseeing, you can choose a guided walking tour around the city, go on a shopping spree, eat out at luxurious restaurants, or try all the flavours of gelato (Italian ice-cream) sitting on a bench in one of the wonderful Florence's parks!
It is very easy to get around in Florence, as its historic centre is relatively small. Everything you need is within easy reach! Using a car in Florence is not comfortable and even not advisable, as there are not so many parking lots, and many streets are either one-ways or pedestrian only. That is why, put a pair of comfortable shoes on and get ready for a fascinating walking trip around Florence: the romantic, refined and artistic gem of Italy!
