Why You Need A Texas Food Handlers Card by Jan Kaas
If you wish to work in a food service establishment, you will at some point be required to have a Texas food handlers card in order to be able to work on your own. When people first begin jobs in restaurants or in any other facility that offer ready-to-eat items for customer consumption, they may not be required to have a Texas food handlers card as someone with a certification for food handling will constantly be around to train you in your specific job duties.
There are many areas making up the food service industry including restaurants, both fast foods and sit-down businesses as well as bars that service food. Additionally, a Texas food handlers card will be needed if you are going to work in temporary seasonal businesses such as those that sell food at fairs and festivals. Even if you sell ready-to-eat sandwiches from a lunch truck you will be required to have a card.
This is not another attempt by the state to make money; it is rather for the protection of the public to which you will be offering the food for sale. A Texas food handlers card is verification that you have received adequate safe food handling training and offers assurances you will not serve anything that could transmit food-born illnesses. A person with this kind of certification is able to train new employees as well as work on their own in many establishments that require a Texas food handlers card.
Texas Department of State Health Services typically inspects every food service business once a month and one of the things they look for is that the person in charge has a Texas food handlers certification and if all of those working unsupervised have their Texas food handlers card.
