Dog Breed

Dog Breeding by Jane Long
Dog breeding is the key to getting the perfect dog. Choosing a dog should never be something that is taken lightly. When you select a dog, it should be a decision based on research and knowledge and not one based on impulse. You should never allow yourself to be taken in by a pair of sad pleading eyes in the local pet store.
Read any book, talk to any experienced dog trainer or contact any kennel club or association, and they will all tell you the same thing - you have to get an animal from a good breeder. There is far more to quality dog breeding than just permitting two purebred dogs to have a litter of puppies.
Top breeders are the ones who know their breed. They have a vast understanding of the history of the breed and its characteristics. They understand the importance of breeding an animal that is true to its heritage. Their concern for the breed and the maintenance of the quality of the line will be of far more importance than the sale and potential earnings from a litter of puppies.
A breeder who knows his animals will recognize dogs that do not fit the breed standard. The standard of any breed is outlined by the various kennel clubs of the world. The standards include the height and weight that both the male and females should be upon reaching maturity. They outline the shape and general appearance of the dog. Coat type, acceptable colors and notable qualities or markings are also documented. These guidelines include any special characteristics of a particular breed, including its temperament and personality. Additionally, these standards identify and clearly outline any faults that a dog may exhibit. Faults can include everything from coat color to behaviour.
Breeders who know their dogs well will select only the dogs that display the very best of all the standards to be a part of their line. Dogs that have faults will not be bred. A responsible breeder will also ensure that his dogs do not become part of another breeding program or end up in a puppy mill. Furthermore, he will ensure that any individuals who adopt his dogs sign agreements to have the animal either spayed or neutered.
Although they may not want the dog to be bred they will still do their very best to ensure that each and every dog that they breed has a good and loving home. They will take the time to evaluate potential buyers and will not merely give the dog to the first person who can pay their asking price.
Serious breeders recognize the need to maintain the quality of the breed. Their first concern is to the breed and ensuring that all the dogs are healthy and are true examples of what the breed should be. This not something that is learned overnight nor is it something that you can find at a puppy store. If you want to get a good dog and one that is true to the breed, then finding people who make dog breeding a lifestyle rather than a business is essential.
