Healthy School Cafeteria Foods: Making School Lunch Healthy and Taste Good! by Angela Costas
People today are concerned about childhood weight issues. Currently one third of all American children are overweight, and 17 percent are obese. The figures are also shown to be climbing instead of declining.
Parents are increasingly asking that schools respond to this issue by offering healthier food options. The days of an unhealthy school lunch full of fast food type items are quickly becoming a thing of the past.
Many school cafeterias have removed fast food and popular junk food items from their lunchrooms, offering students healthy choices to help them improve their health. Today's schools have vending machines that offer bottled water and juice instead of soda.
The perennial child's favorite: the French fry, is soon to become extinct in many schools across the country. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 19 percent of the schools served French fries to their students in 2006. This is down from 40 percent just six years earlier.
Surrounding children with healthy items certainly sets a positive example and encourages a healthy lifestyle. If they are in need of a lunch or a snack item, their choice will then be a healthy one.
Schools are working hard to ensure that lunches offered are tasty and are things that students enjoy eating. It is important that items offered are healthy, but they must also be items that students will reach for and want to eat. Many students now enjoy eating from a salad bar or picking up a yogurt with their lunches. Students will drink bottled water, sports drinks or juice with their lunch instead of soda.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study in the schools shows that progress is being made in offering children healthy items. The School Health Policies and Programs Study 2006 shows that many schools were working hard to offer children healthy lunch alternatives. Schools banning junk food in vending machines rose from 8 to 32 per cent. Schools selling cookies and other baked goods high in fat went down from 38 per cent to 35 per cent. Schools offering salads a la carts rose from 53 to 73 per cent.
Giving students healthy choices helps them to make healthy choices everyday in a controlled environment. Over time, this encourages them to make healthy choices because this is what they enjoy eating. We reach for what we are familiar with eating, so if a student is used to snacking on veggies and fruits -- that is what this student will reach for after school or in their other free time. Offering these healthy choices now gives students a healthy lifestyle for the rest of their life.
