Building the Best Wet Bar for your Home by Steve Kayhill
Are you the type of homeowner who complains "Every time I host a party, everyone seems to end up in the kitchen"? If so, you may want to avoid the same knee-jerk reaction other homeowners make in hiring a contractor to build out a rec room and bar in the basement. Today, modern homes are getting a makeover with built-in bars that are out in plain sight, highly functional and built for speed.
The wet bar doesn't need to shut down when the party ends either. Whether you're entertaining guests or it's just you and your family, the wet bar is the perfect addition for a time-strapped homeowner that needs an easy solution for everyone to serve themselves. The added benefit is that a wet bar, depending on the design, can add a great style element to just about any room.
The Butler's Pantry Bar
This type of bar really resembles a large piece of furniture, like a buffet, because the common length can run a full wall in a large room like a dining area or living room. That space offers plenty of room for guests to migrate however, and the upper shelves provide plenty of space for storing glasses to cover nearly any occasion. Below, many pantry bar designs are setup for wine cooling, drink storage and other types of cooling drawers to save space.
"Pull up a Chair" Bar
The seated bar is a fan favorite, and it's the most commonly built style in many basement rec rooms. The L shape is the most favored style of wet bar where the server remains behind while guests and family can pull up a stool and have a seat while they wait to be served. A contractor often designs the bar with a lip so stools can be slid underneath for storage while also providing a place for elbows to prop while sitting. These designs often have simple sinks, room for small appliances and are typically accented with frosted glass or intricate paneling along the walls, lined with simple trim moulding.
The "Anywhere" Bar
Not sure where to build out a wet bar in your home, or limited by space? Start following the water lines through the house and you might discover that they run through or behind a small closet that could make a perfect, well-concealed wet bar. It may not afford all the luxuries of an extravagant, wall-length serving center but it's a great way to keep the traffic out of the kitchen and among the guests. For this to work, you merely need a small space for a sink, simple storage, small cabinet space to store drinks for the occasion and a small prep area. If you're not into parties it's the perfect place to prepare an after-work chaser.
Ye Olde Pub & Brew Haus
If you're a bit of purist and you want an authentic feel to your bar - and you've got the space for it - you might consider reclaiming the bar from an old pub. It's not as difficult as you think to get your hands on an old bar and hiring a contractor is the perfect way to get it installed without a hitch. Sometimes you can work between a contractor and a dealer in specialty bars to get the bar dismantled and installed properly including retro-fittings. If your budget can't handle the entire bar, then consider just getting your hands on the back-bar area for stocking goods. It's a great way to replicate a saloon room in your home and it's all attainable with the right contractor.
